From the Chairmans desk:

With the holidays upon us here are some handy tips that you might find useful:

  • If you are on insulin, remember when flying to have a letter from your doctor with you stating that you are carrying syringes or insulin pens with you with injection needles as well as a pricking device and testing meter.
  • If you are using an insulin pump also make sure to have a doctors letter with you.
  • When going overseas, always take an extra prescription with you with all your medication - in case your insulin bottles or pens get damaged or something happens to your medication.
  • When flying - always keep your medication in your hand luggage in case your suitcases end on the wrong flight, you at least have your chronic medication with you.
  • If your trip includes connection flights, make sure that you have snacks with you in case your flight gets delayed and you need to have something to eat.
  • When you are driving by car, check your blood glucose regularly and have regular snacks and something to drink.
  • Always keep food and some water in the car - in case you get stuck next to the road due to a traffic jam or if your car breaks down.
  • Always have sweets and snacks with you in the car in case of a low bloodsugar (hypo).
  • When having a hypo immediately stop next to the road and have something to eat first.
  • Only drive again when you are feeling better.
  • Remember that when you are on holiday, your daily routine will be changing.
  • Make sure to check with your medical doctor before you leave on holiday regarding dose changes etc.
  • If you are flying overseas, check with your doctor how to deal with the change in times etc.
  • If you will be spending your days on the beach in the sun, make sure that you drink a lot of fluids and that you snack often - especially if you are going to be swimming in the sea.
  • Take extra care of your feet when on holiday.  If you have circulation problems don't walk around without shoes.
