FOOT CARE TIPS
From the Chairmans desk:
If you have diabetes, you should take very good care of your feet. Here are some foot care tips:
- Wash your feet daily with luke warm water (be careful not to burn your feet with hot water).
- Dry between your toes.
- Stay away from hot water bottles and electric blankets.
- If you need assistance with the correct type of shoes or socks visit a podiatrist trained to assist you.
- Have your feet checked once a year by a podiatrist. They have special machines etc. that help them identify any problems. Should you have problems, they will assist you with the necessary treatment or advice.
- Never wear shoes that is uncomfortable.
- Don’t walk barefoot.
- Put foot cream on your feet every day.
- Wear pure cotton or wool socks.
- If the elastic at the top of socks causes pressure on your legs, cut off the elastic area at the top of the socks. If it still causes pressure, get rid of the socks.
- Buy socks with no seams – you will find these at pharmacies, health shoe shops, hiking shops or at Diabetes SA National Office.
- Do some foot exercises on a daily basis. Ask your doctor or podiatrist for some exercises that you can do.
- If you are experiencing foot, leg problems or circulation problems contact your doctor or visit your podiatrist. Don’t walk around with painful legs and feet, rather seek help.
